Happy Birthday to my Pumpkin Baby!

(Mendel with his pet rat, Yen, at a rest area)

Note to email readers: If you get this in email, you might want to go to the blog. I am posting pictures!

Today I am officially the mom of two teenagers. My youngest son turns 13 today.

I could spend hours and hours telling you all about the fun stuff that I remember from when he was younger. He is very creative and funny... Loves games, has pet rats, loves science experiments and watching netflix... I love all the silly stunts he pulls :) Like the time I opened a new file to find this...

I swear, that was his doing. I did not shove his face into a scanner! He is as big as me. He'd have squashed me flat!

And here is a pic of us in San Diego at the Shelter Island Park. :) He was crab hunting and I was waiting to see our sail boat sail under the Coronado bridge.

We were playing with the camera this day. We tried different lighting techniques. This one is my favorite.

This is my second favorite.

And I love this one too :)

ROCK SURFING!

Here he is at the Maritime Museum. I am looking for a baby picture. I know I have one!

This is in the Anza Borrego desert.

He is such a great kid! I just wanted to share with you all... My baby is a TEENAGER! AGH!

Happy Birthday Mendel!

(I am making him a pizza for his birthday!)

Profound Thoughts of a Mother

I have been pondering this topic for awhile now. My sister-in-law suggested that I blog about my most profound thought as a mother. Damn you Tammy! Making me think! At first I was really excited about it but then I started thinking and I am not sure what exactly I should share. The profound thought of "I gave birth to an evil genius. How the hell did I birth a genius?"

I really got to thinking about it the other day and I am not sure I ever have profound thoughts on mothering. But here are some of my better ideas.

Let them dye their hair, hell, help them dye their hair. If the worse thing my sons ever do if walk around town with neon pink hair, then I can say I have done a pretty good job. Besides, hair will grow out, you can cut it or something. If my first son were still with us, I wouldn't give a crap if his hair were long or short, parted down the middle or spiked into a mohawk. I wouldn't care if his pants were crisp or ripped and ragged. I would care if they were below his butt though. Pull those things up! I don't care what brand of underwear you are wearing.

It's okay to let them learn from their mistakes rather than constantly standing over them telling them what not to do. Although this does have a downside. Like the time my oldest son decided to try burning a sponge in the bathroom, panicked and then threw it under the sink. He nearly caught the bathroom on fire and destroyed a stack of towels in the process.

When you teach your kids to think for themselves, don't be surprised when they argue with you. Oh boy do I ever know that one. They aren't really arguing, they are just standing up for what they think is right.

Kids need their dad. Even if you hate his guts and visualize a thousand ways of how he could die, let them see their dad. They will eventually see him for what he is. And when they do, try to give them another perspective to mull over. Stress, life, work, being broke, mid-life crisis... try to have them stand in his shoes for a moment. I am blessed that my sons have a good relationship with their dad even though we aren't together. But not every child is so blessed. Remind them of the good things he did or does and let them see the good side too.

I know sometimes it is hard to be mom, especially a single mom. But just remember, you are raising future adults so teach to be like the adults you want to know... not the ones you want to run over with your car... by setting a good example instead of being the good example of what not become.

And hug them often. Even on a horrible day, a hug and "I love you no matter what" can go a long way.

Question to my readers: How's the font size?

I was checking out the blog on different browsers. The one I usually check it on (Chrome) looked fine. Firefox on the other hand, the font looks very small. So I thought I would ask everyone out there... does it need to be bigger?

I can type it in this size, which is what I thought it was on but apparently it's not.

And then there's the font that is great is you are visually impaired or want to read the blog from a block away.

I was debating on this size or this size.

What do you think?

Shining Mommy Moments... We All Have them

My friends and I have the running phrase called "Shining Mommy Moments" for the times when we do something absent-minded or stupid that we should probably have our kids toted off to a safe house for the rest of the year. Here are a few "shining Mommy Moments" of mine.

Shining Mommy Moment #1: The "I don't have money!" tantrum
You know those whining, bratty kids in the store that make you want to spank the parent? Well, one day, when my oldest son was almost three, I was in the check out line of the local grocery store standing behind a bratty kid. He was whining and stomping his feet stating he wanted a candy bar. The mom whined a little about not being able to afford it and the kid got louder and whinier and started the full-body, arm swinging, foot stomping tantrum and screamed "BUT I WANT A CANNY BAR!". The mom quickly grabbed one to shut him up which worked, finished paying and left.

My little three old darling decided to try this little tactic. Big mistake. I don't buckle as easy as the spineless mom. He started with a sweet little "Can I hab a canny bar, mom?" I said "No, Honey, I don't have the money for one." He started to whine a little and said "buuut, moooooom, I want one." I just looked at him with the mom look of "Are effing kidding me!?" and said "Well, I don't have money so you aren't getting one." At this point he decided to try the all out tantrum. I told him to knock it off, he wasn't getting a candy bar, especially acting like that.  When that didn't work, he threw himself to the floor and started kicking his feet and screaming.

Usually I am pretty laid back and rather casual. But I was so ticked off that my son would act like this in public. He never acted like that in public before and I can guarantee you he has never done it since then either. What came over me, I will never know. But I figured if he could act like a horse's behind in the store, then so could I! Instead of ripping him off the floor and beating his butt like I wanted to, I decided I would show him how ridiculous he looked. At that, I threw myself to the floor too and went into a full tantrum right along with him. I was kicking, thrashing my arms, rolling around on the floor and screaming "I DON'T HAVE MONEY! I WANT TO HAVE MONEY! WHY CAN'T I HAVE MONEY!"

Everyone in the store stopped and stared at me making a complete fool of myself and gawked at the crazy lady throwing a tantrum. My oldest son was mortified. He started begging me to stop until he was nearly in tears. Finally I stopped mid tantrum, sat up, gave the "you are in so much trouble mister!" look and said "Are y'done yet?" He whimpered "uh-huh." I said "Are y'gonna try that little stunt out in public ever again?" He whimpered "no". At which point I said "Good!" stood up, picked him up and marched out of the store... amidst a round of applause and cheers.

I was SO embarrassed I could've died. But he never threw another fit in public again.

Shining Mommy Moment #2: "I ran over the dog with the c-a-r"
We were helping run an animal rescue for abandoned dogs and cats when we lived in Tennessee. We had quite a few momma dogs and their litters dropped on our doorstep at one time. We ended up with something like 9 cats, 16 dogs and two birds at one point. Each pet was given a name, fed, cleaned and found a home (and neutered or spayed if we could afford it)

I hated pulling into the driveway because their were so many dogs and they would all run to the car. I finally figured out a trick of opening the window, tossing biscuits to the dogs and then I could slowly inch to the house. Well, it worked for awhile.

One night I worked late and got home after the boys were in bed. Let me rephrase that, the boys were SUPPOSED to be in bed. I inched forward counting the dogs to make sure there weren't any in front that I would run over. Somehow, between sleep deprivation and a hyper pack of dogs, I either miscounted or one of them ran around the car while I was counting the dogs on the other side. A few ran off after the biscuits and the rest were waiting for me to open the door so they could get lovings and pettings before I went in.

So I slowly start inching forward and all is going well for about two feet and then I hit a bump and heard a loud yelp. Man, my heart sank. I jumped out of the car and there was my baby black lab... my favorite one... the one I was going to keep... I'll spare you the gruesome details. Let's just say I was absolutely hysterical, heartbroken, crying, shaking... mostly hysterical though.

I ran to the house and, thinking that the boys would be sleeping at one in the morning, I yelled to my husband, "OH MY GOD! I just ran over Princess P.P.!" I hear a loud manly "What?!" and then a small, shaking, sad, devastated little, "You ran over my dog?" from the other direction. Ooops. Guess there is no way we can make up a story of a band of traveling gypsies who came by at 1 a.m. and wanted a dog.

He and his brother were both awake. My husband went outside and took care of Princess P.P. and we buried her. But oh the heartache of hearing my little boys voice with that sad shakey "You ran over my dog?" when I thought they would be sleeping. I felt SO bad!

Shining Mommy Moment #3: Did you hurt the wall?
My youngest son went through a drama queen stage. Bump a toe? He acted like his foot fell off. Bumped his head? You'd have thought someone hit him with a cast iron skillet. He was getting pretty good with the melodrama and I was trying to get him to stop. So I started hamming it up a little. If he was just crying because he dropped something, I would get all melodrama on him and start sobbing "Oh the pain! Oh the horror! Oh the INHUMANITY of it all!" and then throw the back of my hand to my forehead and finish off with a "How will I evuh manage" and hysterical sobbing. For the most part it worked. He would end up belly laughing at me.

For minor injuries I quit with the "brush it off, you're all good!" because it made him more hysterical. Instead I started being a little silly. If he bumped his leg on the coffee table, I would run over all worried, arms outstretched... go right past him and straight to the table and gasp "Oh my gosh! Is the table okay!? I don't see any scuffs or anything! I think it's going to make it!" He would laugh at that too.

But one day I felt like the world's biggest ass of a mom. He running along and ran SMACK, face first into the wall because he wasn't watching where he was going. He grabbed his face like usual and went into a hysterical cry... like usual. So I ran over and gasped "Did you hurt the wall?" and heard him say some muffled crying tone of "(inaudible) my nose". I looked at the wall and nearly fainted. There was a trimming nail sticking out of the wall just a little but and it was surrounded by little flecks of blood. I turned quickly and pulled his hands away from his face to see blood come pouring off his nose.

I was mortified. He got ice cream for dinner. I am an asshole. He still has the scar.

This is getting rather long... I'll share more later.

Soooooo, what's your shining mommy moments?

Not-so-FAQ: What is "wheatshits"?

I was told I should post this as my description is entertaining. Well, okay then...

So I mentioned to someone that I was miserable and have wheatshits today. I got the befuddled look of WTF and was asked "what is THAT?"

Wheatshits are something I get when I accidentally eat something with gluten... then I get the wheatshits about three or four days later. It doesn't have to be wheat. Anything with gluten will do.

I end up with abdominal pain and cramping to the point I would love to just keel over and die. Then comes the wheatshits... poops that make crapping out tabasco sauce sound soothing. It BURNS! It's like crapping napalm and glass shards all at once and the smell could be bottled and used for chemical warfare. I seriously need a gas mask to stay in the bathroom. It's awful!

Aren't you glad you don't have to deal with this!

Emu Oil and Back Pain... the Experiment Updated!

So I bought emu oil as I said in my other post and it is helping... but it's not as "miracle treatment" as I hoped it would be. Here we go... back to the form. You can read my other post to compare the answers.

Pain Level Right Now: 5.2 (I am doing this about the same time of day)

Describe your pain: It's still a burning pain that radiates and it still turns into a stabbing pain but it takes a little longer for it to hit the stabbing pain part. I also noticed that if I lay down on my side, the stabbing pain subsides quite a bit. I have only felt the shock sensation twice since starting the emu oil. I still feel the crunchy and popping feeling but it doesn't hurt now. It just feels weird.

I have to say, while I still hurt pretty bad, it is less intense. I also noticed that I can move easier which is rather nice. Although the burning pain is pretty bad by the end of the day or after attempting to clean my house.

Pattern: The pain is still constant. It gradually builds up during the day still and it's still until my legs feel like Jell-O. I have noticed that the lead feeling on my legs is more now. Which kind of confuses me. I figured it would get better the more I move... NOPE! But, I am still hoping it gets better. Maybe it still needs more time. Go ahead and tell me I am delusional, I have heard it already. The pain is much worse in the evening still but relaxes faster when I am sitting and chilling.

What relieves the pain? I still drink 3 celery stalks juiced but not as often. It makes me have the runs. Not a fun way to get rid of pain. I also found that 50 mg of Benadryl helps to knock me out so I don't really care that I am in pain. But then I wake up in agony because I slept in one position all night. So it's a "damned if I do, damned if I don't" kind of thing.

What Causes or increases the pain? Yes, that is still the same as before, but it's not as intense as quick, which is rather nice.

Effects of Pain
Accompanying symptoms: When it's bad enough, I start shaking uncontrollably still, just not as often now. I get headaches from lack of sleep still. Sometimes it hurts so much that I get nauseous still. I am really starting to feel exhaustion. Not "oh I worked a lot and I am exhausted" but, "holy crap, I think I am going to collapse because I can't function anymore from the lack of sleep" exhaustion.

Sleep: Sucks still but now I sleep about 4-6 hours each day, not all at once though. Occasionally, I will take the benadryl and knock myself out for a bit. It's solid sleep but I still wake up very tired.

Appetite: I noticed I have a better appetite now. I am not sure what to chalk that up to... Less pain, more moving or what. But it's nice.

Physical Activity: I do a lot better at dressing and bathing now. I don't always have to use the shower chair. I do if it's at night, but in the morning I don't need it anymore. I can walk farther now! That's really exciting! I do have to take a day to rest still but it's not so bad. I just chill at home and walk around at home. Before I would just chill, very little walking. Now I can chill with walks around the house. I can clean the house for 30 minutes at a time now. Sometimes a little more, about four times a day with breaks in between, usually about on hour or two. I can stand long enough to cook real meals again. It's actually quite nice :)

Relationship with others:  I still get bitchy, just not as often. I am more social now but with the occasional bowel incontinence (something I was too embarrassed to mention before) I still don't want to go out anywhere for any length of time. It's rather embarrassing and I just die inside thinking I might crap myself out in public.

Emotions:  Mostly it's the same, although I don't cry from pain as much. I am in a better mood thinking that there might be an end in sight. This has given me a lot of hope.

Current Pain Medication: None. The other day I did get my TENS unit. On Monday I am getting an epidural steroid injection. I am hoping a combo of all these things will eventually WORK and I can get back to my regular life. I was really starting to feel bummed and down about the whole thing but I am renewed when it comes to hope and thinking positive about the outcome again.

Other Meds: Benadryl PRN for allergies, Chew Vitamins (2 daily), Flovent (2 puffs in the morning and night), Albuterol inhaler PRN

Taking Care of Kittens

I haven't been on lately because I have been taking care of baby kittens. The momma cat had to be put down. It was very sad :( but the kittens made it just fine. We think one is blind though. They are all eating a lot better and we got two of them to poop finally.

To poop the kittens (since they are too young to poop on their own) we have to massage their little genital area with a warm moist cloth. Today we contacted the vet and she told us to put their little bottoms in a basin with warm water and massage. Finally after 20 minutes we had a successful kitty pooper! WOOHOO!

By next week I will be able post more and yes, I will post kitten and kids pictures for everyone! And yes, I will complete the better blogging stuff too!

See you next week

My super cool stalker cup!

Earlier I posted about one of my stalkers sending me a really cool mug. These are the photos of the mug. Excuse the coffee spots on the rim. I've been using it.

My Stalkers Love Me!

The coolest thing happened today. Granted, the mail ran yesterday but I didn't think about checking it. This morning when I got up, I decided to check the mail. There was a small box on my porch and some junk mail. No, I don't need a car loan. Thank anyway!

I wandered inside with said box and tried to think if I had ordered anything. I did! Checks! But I wasn't sure how in the world they fit checks into a box like that and how in the heck they printed my order THAT fast. My gosh, they must've rush ordered them! I'd be surprised if there any banking info on them.

When I got to the kitchen, I opened the box and found the coolest mug! On the front is a computer (pretty sleek looking too) and under it in blue print is

The Baker's Acres
www.dotchilatham.com
AND it's in the trebuchet font I love so much. In case you are wondering, this is posted in trebuchet font. I stood there admiring the mug for a moment and then turned to look at the back. TOTALLY AWESOME!!! It says
Blogging with reckless abandon since 2003!
I was so stoked! Then I started wondering... who sent this to me? Who had a mug special made just for me? That is the COOLEST thing EVER. Then it really dawned me that this stalker has to be someone I know because

  1. It can to my house address
  2. My house address isn't on my blog, only my mailing address is on my blog
Yea, that's all I got. Lame, I know. But even the domain name registration is private so no one can get my home address. Weird!

So I have been drinking my morning coffee out of this mystery cup from my mystery stalker and I gotta say, I really like it! That is the coolest mug! I will have to post pictures later today once I have batteries for my camera... or I will once my cell phone is charged. I can post from there.

To the stalker (and I say that in a loving, non-creeper kind of way) who bought me this mug... Thank you! If it's who I think it is, I'll be calling you later today... I think. We'll see if I am right!
